Possibly the End of an Era for the
Poway Skimmers RC Flying Club
Poway is kicking us off the lake!!
And How You Can Help Keep Lake Poway Open to R/C Flying (see below)
After thirty-six years of remote-controlled (RC) flying activities at Lake Poway, the Lake Poway Skimmers RC Flying Club has received notice from Poway Park management that their use of the lake for RC-related activities will be prohibited beginning on Jan 1st, 2026. [We are still flying at least until the end of 2025] This decision marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in the club’s history, bringing an end to decades of enjoyment and community engagement. The Poway Skimmers are seeking to be grandfathered in so they may continue to use the recreation area alongside future proposed activities.
Skimmer’s Hopes and Proposed Solutions
The club remains hopeful that the decision to end flying privileges at Lake Poway is not final. Plans are underway to reach out to relevant parties, news outlets, and city officials, including the Mayor, to advocate for the continuation of RC activities. Park management is considering opening the lake seven days a week for fishing and boating. The club proposes that a time slot be reserved where boating is suspended to allow for continued RC flying, noting that their current schedule consists of three hours per day on two days per month. It is believed that most fishing occurs in the morning or evening, making a midday time slot feasible.
The time available to reach an agreement with Poway officials is very limited. The club is considering various options and welcomes suggestions from others who would like to contact the club:

From Curtis:
“We are flying this coming Monday, December 1st weather is looking good with temps in the high 60’s low 70’s with clear skies. We have had some of the best weather for the last two months.
Our Request
We respectfully ask to be grandfathered in, allowing us to continue our tradition of flying one to two three-hour sessions each month. Thank you.
Another Fine Day at Lake Poway – Nov 2025
Curtis is now in the AMA Hall of Fame.

It’s from years of promoting the hobby locally and across the country. My involvement in the clubs and their events and the number of CDs I have done may not of hurt. Honestly it’s just from the level of involvement I have been over the years. They asked for list of what I have done and I could not remember all of it, but a couple of friends filled in the blanks. I made it into the HOF with all yes votes as I understand. Curtis K. (President of Poway Skimmers)
Year 2025 has been one of the best for Poway lake flying. The water has been up, the weeds have not been a problem and the weather has been perfect. The months of September and October have been the best so far. I hope the next two months have the same great weather. In looking back, we have Read more
President’s Message for Nov 2025
We generally fly every other Monday, except Holidays. In case of a holiday, we will often pick the Monday before or after as the makeup day. We will notify members via email of the makeup day. So yes, this means we may fly consecutive Mondays on occasion. Please check the calendar for scheduled flying days. Our primary use of the lake is for RC aircraft although we do allow RC boats as a secondary usage. Please see the rules regarding RC boating. You are required to be both a current AMA member and Lake Poway Skimmers member to operate any RC aircraft or boat at the lake.
If the weather looks bad and we have to cancel a flying session, we will notify members via email by 11:00am Monday (day of). We will also notify members if the following Monday will be a makeup day.
Note we are permitted by City of Poway to fly every Monday but currently this is too hard on our site setup workers. We are working on adding more set up workers and plan to add flying dates to some months. We are only committing flying every other Monday at the current time.
Also, I would like to remind members that we need to drain and dry our planes and boats before leaving. This was requested to help prevent the spread of mussels (that are present even in Lake Poway) to other bodies of water.
Thanks,
Bob
